Grants Spotlight: Renaissance Education, Music & Sports

Renaissance Education, Music & Sports considers in-house music classes to be one of our most important offerings, and we thank Variety for their support of this program. With public funding for music programs becoming more and more scarce, Renaissance E.M.S. helps to fill the gaps by providing high quality music instruction covering vocals, drums, keyboard, guitar, and bass guitar. While we do teach many classes in public schools, the in-house program has a much stronger community, where students can get to know each other and feel welcome and safe in our center – a home away from home.

The benefits of our music classes go beyond solely learning an instrument. Students taking classes have the opportunity to try out for the Renaissance E.M.S. Band, which has played at venues such as Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium. And after progressing through beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes, our older students that have mastered their instruments get the opportunity to teach beginner classes, giving them work experience and the chance to act as a mentor for younger students. One of our achievements we’re very proud of is that for three years in a row, we’ve had multiple students matriculate at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, one of the top music programs in the nation. One such student had never picked up an instrument before her time with Renaissance, and is now a very talented vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. We look forward to working with Variety in the future to continue spreading musical education.
