Grants Spotlight: The POINT

THE POINT is dedicated to youth development and the cultural and economic revitalization of the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. THE POINT engages youth through comprehensive, year-round arts-in-education activities including dance, circus arts, multimedia, photography, drama, music, and visual arts projects. With support from Variety, THE POINT is working to strengthen arts learning opportunities for young people in the South Bronx through new partnerships and resources:

THE POINT is pleased to introduce Open Hydrant Theater Company as its new Live From the Edge Theatre resident group (http://www.openhydrant.org/). In addition to developing their own productions, Open Hydrant is providing drama classes for students in THE POINT’s Youth Development Program. Open Hydrant recently became the first ever Small Professional Theater Company with Actor’s Equity in the South Bronx! This is a triumph for the community that will especially benefit young artists looking to pursue professional careers.

THE POINT is also pleased to share the following student success story: POINT alumna Misra Walker presented at TEDxMidAtlantic 2013 on October 25. TEDxMidAtlantic 2013 is showcasing the stories of those who have led by example, and the ideas that can help us reframe the most intractable problems in new, imaginative ways. Misra is currently a junior at Cooper Union and is a Fine Arts Major. She is the founder of The House of Spoof, an art collective in Hunts Point, The Bronx, that hosts gallery shows for emerging artists and provides free art classes for the community in honor of their friend Glenn “Spoof” Wright who passed away in 2009. Her work blurs the line between activism and art by interrogating the history and politics that make up the backbone of her community. http://tedxmidatlantic.com/2013-speakers/

Another highlight, In Good Company recently led a corporate service project to make improvements to THE POINT’s Riverside Campus for Arts and the Environment. During the service week, companies such as Clif Bar, Timberland and Annie’s came together with volunteers and participants in THE POINT’s Youth Development Programs to work on THE POINT’s Container Gallery, Brickhouse Gallery and Urban Farm, and to build a new concession stand at The Campus! These improvements will help further strengthen THE POINT’s Arts-in-Education Programs and artist groups including The House of Spoof. https://www.facebook.com/InGoodCompanyProjects.
