Grantee Spotlight: Opening Act

Opening ActOpening Act is thrilled to announce we will be hosting our 9th Annual Benefit Play Reading on April 21st, 2015 at the New World Stages in Manhattan. This year’s event features a live reading of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage’s Fabulation or The Re-education of Undine and will be directed by Tony Award-winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun). Every year the Annual Benefit Play Reading brings together the biggest and brightest stars of stage and screen along with our passionate and dedicated network of supporters to celebrate and support the transformative power of Opening Act’s theater arts education program. We are excited to announce that in addition to the celebrity performance and expansive silent auction, for the very first time, this year’s event will feature a 3-course Chef’s Tasting Menu for VIP guests.

While the play reading features Tony and Emmy Award-winning actors and directors, the brightest stars of the evening are Opening Act’s student performers. Each year, the event opens with an inspiring performance by Opening Act’s Student Leadership Council (SLC). The SLC is comprised of current students and alumni representing Opening Act programs from across the city who have demonstrated a consistent passion for performance and unwavering commitment to the program. This year the students will devise and perform an original production based on the themes explored in Fabulation or the Re-educaiton of Undine. This is a performance not to be missed!
